Mitteds & Colorpoints
Currently, CFA does not allow Ragdoll mitted and colorpoint patterns to compete in shows. It is hoped that with time and dedication by Ragdoll breeders, CFA will eventually understand and accept the crucial role these patterns play in our breeding programs and our breed.
There are several explanations for CFA's exclusion of the mitteds and colorpoints, but most revolve around an assertion that they resemble the Birman breed too closely. RBC strongly disagrees with this position and feels that Ragdoll mitteds and colorpoints are distinct in type and structure as well as genetics.
At this time, Ragdoll mitted and colorpoint patterns do not have Any Other Variety (AOV) status. According the the CFA glossary, AOV is defined as "Any registered cat or registered kitten, the ancestry of which entitles it to Championship or Premiership competition, but which does not (colorwise; coatwise; sexwise; in the case of the Manx, tailwise; or earwise in the case of the Scottish Fold) conform to the accepted show standard."
Typically, AOV status is automatically assigned to all non-showable colors, patterns, etc. of any breed with Championship status. Unfortunately, that isn't the case for the mitted and colorpoint Ragdolls.
The Ragdoll breed has submitted proposals to the CFA Board attempting to gain AOV status for our colorpoints and/or mitteds. Although not competition status, AOV status would give Ragdoll breeders the opportunity to present these patterns for assessment by CFA judges, and the judges would be required to handle them. Thus, the differences between the Birman breed and the Ragdoll mitteds and colorpoints could be demonstrated.
The most recent proposal to allow Ragdoll colorpoint pattern AOV status was presented at the February, 2005, CFA Board meeting in Houston. The proposal was defeated by a vote of 12-5, but it did have strong support from several Board members - something that RBC finds very encouraging.
